Unifying the search interfaces on Bandcamp, a music platform where fans directly support artists.

Role: Freelance UX designer, User Interface, Visual Design

Problem

Tags and Discover are two distinct browsing interfaces that have evolved to encompass a lot of the same functionality. How might we unify these interfaces to allow fans to have a consistent, familiar browsing experience? Moreover, most searches are for a specific artist or track name, but genres or ambiguous text are often entered. In these cases, how might we better present the browsing context?

Research

After familiarizing myself with the search functionalities, I realized a few inconsistencies within the search experience:

  • Users can not use Discover or Tags in tandem to specify their search results

  • Users can not search within a selected Tag or apply Tag(s) to an ongoing search query

  • Users can not specify their search results to a song, artist, or label

Solution

My solution for unifying the browsing interfaces was to create a seamless search experience that gives users the ability to search for a specific artist, label, track, or genre and add tags to filter down to precisely what they are looking for.

  • The search bar is now full width and fixed at the top to increase visibility and ease of use

  • When typing into the search box, results appear by category

  • Add Tags and filters to any ongoing search
